ChocMo

Sweet Success

ChocMo, a Crabtree brand, is a cafe and chocolate shop located in Poulsbo, Washington. Established in 2005, ChocMo was the start of the Crabtree family of brands, which now includes High Spirits Liquor, Crabtree Kitchen & Bar, Silver Creek Angus, and Out of the Box Distributing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ChocMo, like most restaurants, faced a steep decline in sales. Recognizing that they had to pivot and enhance their online customer experience quickly, the Crabtree family turned to ATF for help.

ATF migrated each of their businesses in phases starting with High Spirits Liquor, followed by Crabtree Kitchen & Bar, and most recently ChocMo. The goal was to streamline their ecommerce operations to improve the online experience for their customers and to drive value across their portfolio of brands. They were focused on taking advantage of the challenges they were faced with to position their business to grow in new ways.

The Challenge

ChocMo needed to be integrated into the existing Magento 2 instance ATF had already created for Crabtree’s other brands, High Spirits Liquor and Crabtree Kitchen & Bar, to create a cohesive experience for their customers while also accommodating for the unique needs of a website for a cafe and chocolate shop. The shared cart logic would have to be expanded to accommodate the unique requirements of shipping perishable products in addition to the existing age restriction and state-specific regulations for alcohol products, and the time windows and delivery zones for local delivery of prepared foods. And last, but not least, the Crabtrees wanted to create a custom configurator that would allow their chocolate customers to build their own custom chocolate boxes selecting quantity, chocolate type, and filling type.

The Solution

ATF added the new ChocMo site to the existing M2 multi-store instance, extending the functionality to accommodate the unique requirements of the chocolate brand. The shared cart was upgraded to handle the shipment of perishables to ensure that the chocolates wouldn’t melt in transit and that a customer could still place a pick-up order for a steak dinner, bottle of wine, and a box of chocolates in a single transaction from three distinct brands with a shared cart. It was a logistical puzzle to figure out but despite all of the complexities of offering products with age-restrictions, state-restrictions, time of day and address rules for pickup or delivery options based on customer location and product perishability, we were able to deliver exactly what the Crabtrees were looking for to best serve their customers.

We also developed a custom chocolate box configurator that allows customers to select the types and quantities of chocolates they want, personalizing the experience whether they are purchasing for themselves or as a gift.

Project Highlights

With the addition of ChocMo to the Magento multi-store, Crabtree customers can now conveniently shop for chocolates, liquor, and restaurant-cooked meals, all in one transaction.

Custom Chocolate Configurator

We leveraged Magento’s bundled product base to build a custom chocolate configurator that allows users to create personalized boxes of truffles, caramels, or a combination. Our custom solution included dynamic filters, box size selection, and unique pricing logic, providing a tailored experience that couldn’t be achieved with the standard bundled product type.

Expanded Cart Functionality

The multi-store shared cart got an upgrade, building off of and modifying the existing logic to include the requirements of pickup, local delivery, and shipment of chocolate in the same transaction as alcohol and prepared meals.

Gift Messaging Option

Because ChocMo chocolates are a frequently gifted item, including the option for gift messaging was an important addition to the ChocMo site. Customers can now add a short message to be included on a card with their gift.
